Dr Thong graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 1994. He subsequently underwent Advanced Specialty Training in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology/Allergy at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore from 1999-2002, followed by a Health Manpower Development Plan Fellowship in Adult and Paediatric Clinical Immunology and Allergy in Southampton, UK.

He is currently the Divisional Chairman, Medicine and a Senior Consultant of the Department of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Chairman of the Section of Clinical Immunologists and Allergists, College of Physicians Singapore, and a Board Member of the Asia-Pacific Association of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology (APAAACI)

He is the Associate Editor of APAllergy journal (the journal of the Asia Pacific Association of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology)

His research interests include: Drug allergy, anaphylaxis, COVID-19 vaccine allergy.
