Prof Teo graduated with a degree in medicine from the National University of Singapore in 1989 and attained his Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine and MRCP (UK) in 1994. He is one of the pioneers of Changi General Hospital and has risen through the ranks to become Senior Consultant and Head of Gastroenterology in 2004, Chief of Medicine in 2006 and Deputy Chairman of the Medical Board in 2008. He is appointed Chairman, CGH Medical Board in 2012 and Deputy Group Chairman, SingHealth Medical Board in 2017.
While on HMDP training at the University of Michigan Medical Center, he wrote research papers in Hepatitis which were published in high impact publications. This has remained his forte as he continues to contribute to scientific journals and conference presentations.
Prof Teo sits on the Residency Advisory Committee for both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is a member of the Singapore Healthcare Improvement Network Council. Apart from sitting on the Medical Advisory Board of the Singapore Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces, Prof Teo is also appointed by the Singapore Prison Service as the Vice-Chairman of the Medical Advisory Panel.
Prof Teo was the President of the Gastroenterological Society of Singapore from 2008 to 2010. He is currently the Assistant Master and Council Member of the Academy of Medicine Singapore and is also appointed the Vice Dean of its Deanery Academic Board. Prof Teo holds Professorship from the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School as well as the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and is an Adjunct Professor of the Singapore University of Technology and Design. He is also a Clinical Examiner of the PACES/MRCP, MBBS and Duke-NUS examinations.
Prof Teo was Chief Editor of the Singapore Medical Journal from 2010 to 2013 and is currently serving as Advisor on its Editorial Board. He is also an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and a reviewer for journals such as Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, the Singapore Medical Journal, ANNALS, Journal of Medical Virology and Biomedical Central.
Throughout his medical career, Prof Teo has received many awards – CGH Best Teacher Award, CGH Top Medical Mentors Award, SingHealth Quality Service Award, Eastern Health Alliance Caring Award, Public Administration Medal (Silver) Award and Long Service Medal – to name a few.
